Welcome to Mr. Volmer's Social Studies Website
The study of history is not simply a study of dates, people, and events. History is the story of the earth and the people that inhabit it. This class will be a study of the story of good vs. evil and the people that took risks to change the course of history. Our class will be a study of different perspectives, and different points of view. Only then will we begin to gain an understanding of what really happened during a particular event. We will learn and study the causes of war, peace, pain, suffering, intolerance, hatred, strength and courage. We will not only learn about these topics, but work to develop our own opinions and arguments on these subjects. We will work constantly to discover truth and meaning in everything we do; lectures, assignments, readings, activities, and our own lives. Our studies will allow us to understand how what came before helped to shape what came after, and how we are living our lives now will affect and change our future. The more we study history, different cultures and different people, the more tolerant, understanding, and compassionate people we will become. Through the learning of other people we will understand that their struggle is our struggle and the things that make us so different are the things that make us exactly the same........human.
* Note * The picture above is a photograph taken by NASA of the earth at night. You can see in the picture the places on earth that are the most inhabited and brightest. These places are also the ones that consume the most energy, produce the most waste, and live a very different life compared to the areas that are darkened.
